Summary

The FAA is asking for public feedback to renew and update the paperwork needed to record and release security interests on aircraft and related parts. Comments are open until January 8, 2026, and the goal is to keep the process clear and efficient without adding extra hassle or cost.

Paperwork burden for aircraft liens

If you file or release a security interest on an aircraft, engine, propeller, or spare part, you must complete AC Form 8050-98 and AC Form 8050-41 (or an equivalent form that meets recording requirements). In FY2024 there were 25,216 security conveyances and 18,252 release notifications; the FAA estimates average burdens of 45 minutes and 15 minutes per response and a total annual burden of 23,475 hours. The FAA is asking for public comments on this paperwork renewal and revision; submit comments by January 8, 2026.

Option to use your own recording form

The FAA Registry provides AC Form 8050-98 and AC Form 8050-41, but a security holder may use their own form to record or release a security interest as long as the form meets the Registry's recording requirements. The release is made official when the lienholder completes Part II—Release on AC Form 8050-41 (or an equivalent) and returns it to the Registry.
