No Free Hotels: Airlines Off-Hook for Safety Delay Woes
Published Date: 12/10/2025
Rule
Summary
Starting December 10, 2025, airlines won’t have to treat delays or cancellations caused by urgent, required airplane repairs as their fault. This means if your flight is delayed because of emergency fixes to certain Airbus parts, airlines aren’t required to provide free meals or hotels. This change affects passengers flying with big U.S. airlines and stays in place until new rules come out.

No Guaranteed Meals or Hotels for AD Repairs
Starting December 10, 2025, airlines will not be treated as responsible for delays or cancellations caused by unscheduled maintenance required by an FAA airworthiness directive that cannot be deferred (for example, EAD 2025-24-51). That means affected passengers flying with the largest U.S. airlines are not required to receive free rebooking, hotel accommodations, or meals for those disruptions. This enforcement policy stays in effect until further notice or until the Department finishes the rulemaking RIN 2105-AF29.
