Two Native American Remains Identified

The University of South Florida and the Florida Department of State identified human remains representing two individuals excavated in 2013 from Crystal River (8CI1) and Roberts Island (8CI41) in Citrus County, Florida. They determined the remains are culturally affiliated with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians; Seminole Tribe of Florida; and The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, and FDOS retains legal control while USF holds physical custody.

Repatriation Available Starting January 20, 2026

Repatriation of the human remains described in this notice may occur on or after January 20, 2026. Tribes or eligible requestors may start the formal repatriation process beginning on that date.

Who Can Request Repatriation and Conflict Rules

Written requests for repatriation may be submitted by any one or more of the three named Indian Tribes, by a lineal descendant, or by another tribe or organization that shows by a preponderance of the evidence a cultural affiliation. If competing requests are received, the University of South Florida and the Florida Department of State must determine the most appropriate requestor; joint repatriation requests are treated as a single request.

No Known Hazardous Treatment of Remains

The notice states that the institutions are not aware of the presence of any potentially hazardous substances used to treat the human remains. This indicates no known chemical or treatment risk associated with handling these remains.
