Five Advisory Board Seats Open
You can be nominated for one of five open seats on the Advisory Board for Exceptional Children that focus on roles such as Indian persons with disabilities, teachers of children with disabilities, state education officials, local education officials, State Interagency Coordinating Councils, and tribal representatives. The BIE will appoint members to staggered two- or three-year terms.
No Salary; Travel Reimbursement
If you are appointed, you will not receive salary or other compensation, but you will be reimbursed for travel and subsistence expenses incurred while performing Advisory Board duties in the same manner as intermittent Government employees under 5 U.S.C. 5703.
Term Lengths and Appointment Authority
Advisory Board members serve staggered terms of two years or three years from their appointment date, and members (including the chair) are appointed by the Secretary of the Interior (the Assistant Secretary may recommend a chair).
Meetings Open; Frequency Stated
The Advisory Board meets at least three or four times per year (budget permitting), additional meetings may occur as needed, and all Advisory Board meetings are open to the public so you may attend.

You (or your organization or tribe) may submit nominations or self-nominate by sending a completed application form and a resume/CV to the Designated Federal Officer; the nomination application form is on the BIE website and must be submitted by February 27, 2026.
