Published Date: 1/2/2026

Rule

Summary

If you own or fly Airbus Helicopters Deutschland models MBB-BK 117 C-2, D-2, or D-3, listen up! The FAA found some hoist hooks and nuts might be damaged, so they’re requiring inspections and replacements if needed. Starting February 6, 2026, you can’t install old-style hoist hooks without following new rules, keeping everyone safer without breaking the bank.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandatory hoist-hook inspections and fixes

If you own or operate an Airbus Helicopters Deutschland MBB-BK 117 C-2, D-2, or D-3, you must inspect the hoist hook and hook nut and replace them if damaged. The FAA estimates the inspection costs 2 work-hours (2 × $85 = $170) per helicopter and that 176 U.S.-registered helicopters are affected (total inspection cost estimated $29,920). If replacement is needed, the FAA estimates an on-condition cost of $8,647 per replacement (1 hour labor $85 plus parts $8,562).

New installation prohibitions and procedures

Starting February 6, 2026, you may not install an affected assembly (hoist hook attached to the hook damper) on any helicopter. You also may not install an affected hoist hook on any helicopter unless it is installed using the updated installation procedures required by the AD.

No parts-return or reporting requirement

Although the referenced EASA AD asks operators to submit information and return parts to the manufacturer, this FAA AD does not require submitting information or returning parts to the manufacturer.
