Brazilian Steel Wire Rod Duties Extended for Fair Competition

Published Date: 1/9/2026

Notice

Summary

The U.S. Department of Commerce decided to keep the countervailing duties (extra taxes) on carbon and certain alloy steel wire rod from Brazil because removing them could bring back unfair subsidies. This means U.S. steel makers like Nucor and Commercial Metals Company stay protected from cheaper, subsidized imports starting January 9, 2026. So, importers will keep paying these duties, helping American producers compete fairly.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Importers Keep Paying Duties

If you import carbon and certain alloy steel wire rod from Brazil, you will continue to pay countervailing duties beginning January 9, 2026. The Department of Commerce decided not to revoke the CVD order, so importers must keep paying these extra duties on that product.

U.S. Steelmakers Remain Protected

U.S. steel producers such as Nucor Corporation and Commercial Metals Company remain protected from subsidized Brazilian steel wire rod because the countervailing duties were continued. The Department of Commerce found that removing the order would likely lead to recurrence of subsidies.

Specified Duty Rates for Brazilian Exporters

Commerce assigned net countervailable subsidy rates to Brazilian producers/exporters: Companhia Siderurgica Belgo-Mineira 6.74%, Gerdau S.A. 2.76%, and an All-Others rate of 5.64%. These percentage rates apply ad valorem to the covered imports.
