Truck Mirrors Out, Cameras In: Safety Tech Exemption

Published Date: 1/9/2026

Notice

Summary

Aumovio SE wants permission to replace traditional truck side mirrors with their high-tech ProViu Mirror camera system on commercial vehicles. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is asking the public to share their thoughts by February 9, 2026. This change could modernize truck safety gear without extra costs, affecting truck drivers and companies nationwide.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

5-Year Exemption to Replace Truck Mirrors

Aumovio asked FMCSA for a 5-year exemption from 49 CFR 393.80(a) to let motor carriers operate commercial motor vehicles with Aumovio's ProViu Mirror camera monitor system instead of the two rear-vision mirrors now required. FMCSA will review the application and public comments to decide if the camera system provides an equivalent or greater level of safety.

Limited Initial Demonstration Deployment

Aumovio estimates an initial proof-of-concept deployment of 50 to 100 commercial motor vehicles with the ProViu Mirror system, giving about 100 drivers the opportunity to use the system during demonstrations. Future deployment depends on results from these demonstrations.

Out-of-Service Requirement for System Failures

Aumovio states that if the ProViu Mirror camera system malfunctions, is damaged, or experiences an environmental condition that could affect safe operation, the vehicle would be taken out of service and returned to service only after the condition is corrected, the same as vehicles with traditional mirrors.
