Return of Eight Sacred Native Items

The Kansas State Historical Society intends to return eight sacred Native American cultural items — a beaded pouch, bags and jar, a whistle, leg cuffs, hair pipes, and an eagle feather — to affiliated tribes, including the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, Montana. The repatriation may occur on or after February 17, 2026, and no money will be exchanged; the action follows the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

Who May Request Repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not already identified in the notice may submit a written request for repatriation if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or are culturally affiliated. If competing requests are received, the Kansas State Historical Society will decide the most appropriate requestor; repatriation may occur on or after February 17, 2026.
