Large time burden for NHSN reporting
If you run or work at a healthcare facility that reports to the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), CDC estimates the revision will impose a total of 3,836,550 annual burden hours across respondents. NHSN enrollment exceeds 37,000 facilities (including over 6,000 acute care and nearly 20,000 long-term care facilities), and CDC states there are no additional monetary costs to respondents beyond the time spent reporting.
Revision adds many new and changed NHSN forms
CDC proposes revisions that cover changes to 68 approved NHSN data collections and the addition of five new collections, and requests OMB approval under Control No. 0920-0666 (expiration 2027-12-31). These changes will alter which data NHSN collects and which forms or digital uploads facilities must submit.
30-day public comment opportunity
If you are involved in healthcare or data collection for NHSN, you can submit comments or suggestions to CDC and OMB within 30 days of the notice published January 20, 2026 via www.reginfo.gov or written submission to the OMB CDC Desk Officer. CDC is specifically asking for input on burden, utility, clarity, and electronic submission options.
