Notice
Summary
The FMCSA is renewing its approval to keep tracking rules that require big trucks and certain freight equipment to have proper markings. This affects motor carriers, freight forwarders, and equipment providers who operate across state lines or handle hazardous materials. Comments on this plan are open until March 23, 2026, with no new costs introduced—just a smooth continuation of current rules.
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.
Time Burden: 26 Minutes Per Marking
FMCSA estimates 938,861 total respondents must mark CMVs (900,043 freight carriers; 20,878 intrastate hazardous materials carriers; 16,409 passenger carriers; and 1,531 intermodal equipment providers). The Agency estimates 26 minutes per response (12 minutes to affix a USDOT number and 14 minutes to affix a carrier name) and a total annual burden of 4,687,689 hours across all respondents.
Renewal Keeps Truck Marking Rules
If you operate big trucks or intermodal equipment across state lines, or transport hazardous materials intrastate under the Hazardous Materials Safety Permit (HMSP) rules, FMCSA is renewing approval to continue requiring markings on self‑propelled commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and intermodal equipment. The Agency says this is a continuation of current rules with no new costs introduced. Comments on the renewal are due by March 23, 2026 and the current approval expires July 31, 2026.
Estimated Burden Hours Reduced
FMCSA reports a decrease of 2,509,249 estimated annual burden hours compared with the previously approved estimate (from 7,196,938 approved hours to 4,687,689 proposed hours). The reduction is attributed to adjustments in respondent and response estimates.
