19 Drivers Get Hearing Exemptions Renewed

FMCSA renewed exemptions for 19 named hard-of-hearing or deaf commercial motor vehicle drivers, allowing them to continue operating interstate big rigs. The renewals became applicable on specific dates in January 2026 (for example, January 3, 6, 8, 14, and 21, 2026) and each exemption will expire two years later on the corresponding date in January 2028.

Exemptions Carry Reporting And Use Limits

Each renewed exemption requires the driver to report any crashes within 7 days, report citations/convictions for disqualifying offenses within 7 days, submit annual certified driving records, meet CDL testing requirements, and carry a copy of the exemption when driving. Each exempt driver is also prohibited from operating a motorcoach or bus with passengers in interstate commerce.

Federal Exemptions Preempt Conflicting State Laws

While an exemption is in effect, no State may enforce any law or regulation that conflicts with that exemption for the person operating under it. This preserves the federal exemption's effect across State lines for the exempt drivers during the two-year period.
