Tribes Identified as Eligible Claimants

If you are a member of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, or the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, the University of Florida's Florida Museum of Natural History has determined a cultural affiliation and those Tribes are identified in this notice as eligible to request repatriation.

Repatriation Effective Date Set

Repatriation of the human remains and associated funerary objects described in this notice may occur on or after March 4, 2026. Contact the University of Florida, Florida Museum of Natural History to begin a repatriation request after that date.

Who May Request Repatriation

Repatriation requests may be submitted by any one or more of the Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations named in this notice, or by any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not named who shows by a preponderance of the evidence that they are culturally affiliated.

Competing Requests and Joint Repatriation Rules

If competing requests for repatriation are received, the museum (FLMNH) must determine the most appropriate requestor before repatriation. Requests for joint repatriation are treated as a single request and not as competing requests.

Scope of Remains and Funerary Objects

The FLMNH inventory includes human remains representing at least two Native American individuals and 940 associated funerary objects (faunal bone, pumice, pottery, and shell) from sites Cape Sable 2 (8MO38) and Pavillion Key (8MO107). These items are the subject of potential repatriation.
