Trucks Seek Permission for Flashy Amber Brake Lights Safety Boost

Published Date: 2/18/2026

Notice

Summary

Truck-Lite Co., LLC wants permission to add flashing amber brake lights on the back of big trucks and trailers, along with the regular brake lights. This change could make trucks safer by grabbing attention better when they stop. The public can share their thoughts by March 20, 2026, before any decision is made.

Truck rear amber pulsating lamps allowed?

Truck-Lite asked FMCSA for a 5-year exemption to let commercial trucks and trailers have auxiliary amber brake-activated pulsating warning lamps on the rear in addition to the required steady-burning brake lamps. The auxiliary lamp pulses in amber for up to four seconds with each brake application then changes to steady red, and the public comment period closes on March 20, 2026. Truck-Lite and prior operator reports say these lamps have shown decreases in rear-end events, which could make trucks safer.

Exemption comes with installation and reporting rules

Truck-Lite proposes that any exemption be conditioned so the auxiliary pulsating lamps are installed in addition to (not replacing) required steady-burning brake lamps, and that manufacturers or motor carriers keep records and provide periodic reports to FMCSA on incidents, warranty claims, and safety complaints. The prior similar exemption expired December 2, 2025, and Truck-Lite asked that reporting and conspicuous owner/operator information be part of the exemption terms.
