Analyzed Economic Effects
4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.
25% Tariff on Autos and Parts
If you import affected autos or auto parts, a 25 percent tariff was imposed on certain automobiles effective April 3, 2025, and on certain automobile parts effective May 3, 2025. Those importers and businesses that deal in those covered cars and parts face the applied tariff rates starting on those dates.
Paperwork: 200 Businesses, 8 Hours Each
If you run a for‑profit business affected by these auto‑parts rules, about 200 businesses are expected to respond to the Department of Commerce information collection, spending an average of 8 hours each (1,600 total burden hours). The collection is voluntary, labeled OMB Control Number 0625-0284, and responses are expected on a quarterly basis.
Inclusion Rules Extended to MHDVs and Buses
Proclamation 10984 (October 17, 2025) amended earlier rules to include medium‑ and heavy‑duty vehicles (MHDVs), medium‑ and heavy‑duty vehicle parts (MHDVPs), and buses within the inclusion process for tariffs under Section 232. This extension applies the same inclusion framework to those vehicle categories.
Producers Can Request Inclusion
If you are a domestic producer of automobiles or automobile parts (or an industry association representing them), you can request that additional automobile parts be included within the tariff scope. The Secretary of Commerce must issue a determination within 60 days of receiving such a request after consulting the U.S. International Trade Commission and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
