Rule
Summary
If you own an Extra NG airplane, listen up! The FAA found that the canopy might pop open or even fall off mid-flight if it’s not locked right. Starting April 21, 2026, you’ll need to update your canopy warning stickers and tweak your flight manual to keep things safe—no big costs, just smart fixes to keep you flying worry-free.
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.
Mandatory Canopy Placard Replacement
If you own an Extra Model EXTRA NG airplane, you must replace canopy placards at the front and rear canopy handles within 3 months or 25 hours time-in-service, whichever occurs first, after April 21, 2026. The FAA estimates this affects 30 U.S.-registered airplanes and costs about $95 per airplane (1 work-hour at $85 plus $10 parts).
POH/AFM Revision Required Before Flight
After replacing the canopy placards, you must revise the Limitations section of the Pilot Operating Handbook/Airplane Flight Manual (POH/AFM) to include canopy placard P/N EX-01106.01 before the next flight after the replacement. The FAA estimates this revision takes 1 work-hour ($85) per airplane and affects 30 U.S.-registered airplanes.
Placard Installation Prohibition
As of April 21, 2026, do not install any canopy placard that is not part number (P/N) EX-01106.01-Canopy on Extra Model EXTRA NG airplanes. This prohibition is an ongoing compliance requirement tied to the AD.
