Summary
The Postal Service is updating its rules about fees for overweight and oversize packages. Starting July 12, 2026, most overweight or oversize items found in the mail system will face a $200 fee before they’re released, except those caught and returned during retail transactions. This change affects anyone sending big or heavy packages and aims to keep the mail moving smoothly.

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.
New $200 Fee for Oversize Packages
If you send a package that is overweight or oversize and it is found in the postal network, the Postal Service will charge a $200 fee that must be paid before the package is released. This rule takes effect July 12, 2026 and applies to most retail and commercial paid overweight or oversize items found after entering the mail system.
Retail-Stage Returns Avoid the Fee
If your overweight or oversize item is discovered during a retail transaction and is returned to you at that counter, you will not be charged the $200 fee. The exemption applies only to items found and returned during the retail transaction.
Size and Weight Limits Reminder
The Postal Service's maximum weight is 70 pounds and the maximum combined length and girth is 130 inches; items exceeding those limits are considered overweight or oversize. Overweight or oversize items should not be entered into the postal network and are subject to the $200 fee if found in the network.
