FAA Proposes Inspections for Boeing 737 Fuel Leaks
Published Date: 3/26/2026
Proposed Rule
Summary
The FAA wants Boeing 737-700, -700C, -800, and -900ER planes checked for fuel leaks caused by a gasket problem near the engine fuel shutoff valve. They’re asking for detailed inspections and leak tests to keep flights safe. Comments on this plan are open until May 11, 2026, and fixing any leaks might cost some time and money but will keep everyone flying worry-free.

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.
Mandatory 737 FiP Gasket Inspections
If you operate Boeing 737-700, -700C, -800, or -900ER airplanes, the FAA proposes required detailed inspections of the left and right form‑in‑place (FiP) gaskets at the engine fuel shutoff valve access panels and fluid leak tests following Boeing Alert Requirements Bulletin 737-57A1359 RB dated October 3, 2025. The FAA estimates the inspection takes 1 work-hour ($85) and the leak test takes 1 work-hour ($85) per airplane and that 1,030 U.S.-registered airplanes would be affected.
Mandatory Gasket Replacement for Any Leak
This proposed AD requires that if any fluid leak is found during the leak test, the FiP gasket must be replaced and the leak test repeated until no leak is found (the AD replaces the bulletin's more general on-condition wording). The FAA estimates replacement is 2 work-hours (2 x $85 = $170) with negligible parts cost.
Estimated U.S. Fleet Impact and Costs
The FAA estimates the proposed AD would affect 1,030 U.S.-registered airplanes. The agency estimates $85 per airplane for the inspection and $85 per airplane for the leak test, which it reports as $87,550 total cost to U.S. operators for each of those actions (1,030 × $85). The FAA also states it has no definitive data on how many replacements will be needed.
Manufacturer Warranty May Reduce Costs
The FAA notes the manufacturer says some or all of the costs of this proposed AD may be covered under warranty, which could reduce the cost impact on affected operators. The FAA does not quantify how much warranty coverage would apply.
