Airbus Overhead Bins Get Tie Rod Checkup: FAA's Luggage Lifesaver Rule
Published Date: 4/6/2026
Rule
Summary
The FAA is making sure certain Airbus Canada airplanes (models BD-500-1A10 and BD-500-1A11) are safe by checking the tie rods holding overhead bins. Some tie rods didn’t have enough thread engagement, which could be risky, so inspections and fixes are now required by May 11, 2026. This keeps passengers safe without breaking the bank or causing big delays.
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.
Mandatory tie-rod inspections by May 11, 2026
If you operate Airbus Canada Model BD-500-1A10 or BD-500-1A11 airplanes, the FAA requires an inspection of the tie rods that support overhead stowage compartments and adjustment if thread engagement is inadequate. This AD is effective May 11, 2026 and requires adjusting any inadequate tie rod engagement before further flight after the inspection.
Estimated inspection cost per airplane
The FAA estimates this AD affects 80 U.S.-registered airplanes and that the required inspection will take 12 work-hours at $85/hour, for an estimated direct cost of $1,020 per airplane and $81,600 on U.S. operators. If an on-condition action is required, the FAA estimates 1 work-hour at $85 ($85) per airplane.
FAA finds no significant small-entity impact
The FAA identified two air carriers and two corporate trustees that will be affected and determined, using SBA size standards, that all four are large businesses. The FAA certified that this AD will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities under the Regulatory Flexibility Act.
