Repatriation to The Osage Nation

The University of Missouri's Museum of Anthropology has determined that human remains representing at least one individual and 1,202 associated funerary objects from Site 23OR21 (Pigman Mound), Oregon County, Missouri, are affiliated with The Osage Nation. These remains and objects may be returned beginning May 11, 2026.

Who May Request Repatriation and Process

Written requests for repatriation must be sent to the Museum's authorized representative and may be submitted by The Osage Nation, other Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations named in the notice, or a lineal descendant or tribe that shows cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence. If competing requests are received, the University of Missouri must determine the most appropriate requestor before repatriation; joint requests count as a single request.
