Published Date: 4/9/2026

Presidential Document

Summary

Starting October 1, 2026, the government will cut spending in many areas to help control the budget for fiscal year 2027. These spending cuts, called sequestration, affect most government programs except a few that are protected. The Office of Management and Budget has figured out exactly how much money will be trimmed to keep the budget balanced and reduce the deficit.

Across‑the‑Board Cuts to Non‑Exempt Programs

Starting October 1, 2026, direct spending budgetary resources for fiscal year 2027 in each non-exempt federal budget account will be reduced by the amounts calculated in the Office of Management and Budget's report to Congress of April 3, 2026. These cuts (sequestration) apply to most non-exempt government programs.

Some Programs Remain Exempt from Sequestration

The sequestration order applies only to non-exempt budget accounts, so budget accounts that are exempt will not have their direct spending reduced under this order. The Office of Management and Budget's April 3, 2026 report identifies the specific amounts and accounts.
