Coast Guard Locks Down Miami Waters for 2026 World Cup Fest

Published Date: 4/16/2026

Proposed Rule

Summary

To keep everyone safe during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Fan Fest in Miami, the Coast Guard wants to create a temporary security zone in Biscayne Bay. This means boats can’t anchor or hang out in certain waters near Bayfront Park unless they get special permission. The rule will be in effect from June 13 to July 5, 2026, and the public can share their thoughts by May 18, 2026.

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Boaters: No Stopping or Anchoring

If you operate a boat in Biscayne Bay near Bayfront Park, you may not enter, stop, anchor, or remain in the temporary security zone without permission from the Captain of the Port Miami. The zone covers waters bounded by coordinates beginning at 25°46'43.32" N, 80°10'59.88" W through 25°46'17.75" N, 80°11'05.65" W (WGS 84) and will be enforced 24 hours a day from 6:00 a.m. on June 13, 2026 through 6:00 a.m. on July 5, 2026; vessels must transit at a steady speed and must notify the COTP on VHF channel 16 if forced to stop.

24/7 Enforcement With Patrols

The Coast Guard will enforce the security zone 24 hours a day from 6:00 a.m. on June 13, 2026 through 6:00 a.m. on July 5, 2026. Coast Guard patrol boats and local law enforcement will be on scene with flashing energized blue lights, and vessels must follow lawful orders from the Captain of the Port or designated representatives given on VHF-FM channel 16 or by phone.

Small Business Economic Impact Certification

The Coast Guard certified under 5 U.S.C. 605(b) that this proposed security zone will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities. The agency says the rule affects a small area of Biscayne Bay for about 24 days, vessels can transit around the zone via the Intracoastal Waterway, and the only restriction is the inability to stop or anchor within the zone.
