Faster NRC Reviews for DOE/DOW-Authorized Reactors

The NRC issued a draft Interim Staff Guidance to help companies get NRC approvals faster by using prior U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of War (DOW) authorizations. The guidance is meant to let applicants leverage DOE/DOW-reviewed information to reduce paperwork and streamline NRC reviews for certain reactor designs.

Proposed Regulatory Pathway to Allow Streamlining

The NRC is also pursuing a related rulemaking to amend 10 CFR part 50 and part 53 to establish an explicit pathway for streamlined licensing reviews of commercial reactor designs that previously received DOE or DOW authorization. The proposed rule was published and noticed for comment in the Federal Register on April 2, 2026 (91 FR 16584).

DOE–NRC MOU Addendum Enables Leveraging Safety Analyses

The NRC issued an addendum to a Memorandum of Understanding with DOE to coordinate technical expertise and allow documented safety analyses from DOE-authorized, tested reactor facilities to be leveraged in NRC licensing. This addendum is intended to help expedite future NRC licensing activities pursuant to Executive Order 14300, section 5(d).
