Updated PFAS destruction guidance

The EPA released an updated interim guidance on destroying and disposing of PFAS and PFAS-containing materials and is seeking public comment through June 29, 2026. The update builds on the April 16, 2024 interim guidance and is intended for decision makers, regulators, waste managers, and affected communities.

Key data gaps limit recommendations

The 2026 interim guidance identifies key data gaps and uncertainties that EPA says must be resolved before it can give more definitive recommendations on PFAS destruction and disposal technologies. Stakeholders should note that definitive EPA recommendations are not being issued until those gaps are addressed.

Statutory three-year update cycle

Under the FY 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (signed December 19, 2019), EPA must update interim PFAS destruction and disposal guidance at least every three years. That legal requirement means stakeholders can expect future guidance updates on a multi-year cycle.
