Commerce Bureau Corrects Metal Tariff Schedule Errors
Published Date: 4/29/2026
Notice
Summary
The government fixed two small but important errors in the rules about tariffs on aluminum, steel, and copper imports, originally set by a Presidential Proclamation on April 2, 2026. These changes make sure the tariff schedule is clear and accurate, affecting imports starting April 6, 2026. If you deal with these metals, these corrections help avoid confusion and keep trade running smoothly—no extra costs or delays expected.

Tata UK Steel Keeps Lower Tariff Until 2028
If you import U.K.-origin steel made by Tata Steel UK whose reported country of melt and pour is the Netherlands, those articles may continue to be imported under the lower section 232 U.K.-origin steel tariff rate and declared under Heading 9903.82.04 until January 1, 2028. Those articles may also count toward the 95 percent melted-and-poured test in Note 16(d) for Headings 9903.82.04 and 9903.82.05 until January 1, 2028.
New HTSUS Heading Excludes Nonmetal Goods
If you import goods listed under subparts (c)(i)-(x) of U.S. Note 16 but the items do not contain any aluminum, steel, or copper, use the new HTSUS heading 9903.82.01 so the duties from the Presidential Proclamation do not apply. This change is effective for entries on or after 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on April 6, 2026.
