  • States and territories: States would have to establish processes to obtain address information from reliable federal data sources (42 CFR 435.919(f)(1)(iii)) and act on changes. The requirement applies to the 50 States and the District of Columbia and takes effect January 1, 2026.
  • Managed care plans: Contracts with managed care entities would have to require plans to send to the State any address information they obtain or verify directly with an enrollee, starting January 1, 2026.

New address checks for Medicaid and CHIP

If enacted, states would regularly check and update Medicaid addresses using reliable sources and act on changes. This would apply in the 50 States and D.C., and CHIP would be tied to the same rule upon enactment. Starting January 1, 2026, Medicaid managed care plans would have to send any address you give or confirm to the state. This could reduce lost mail and help prevent coverage gaps.
