- Married couples filing jointly could exclude up to $1,000,000 of gain, doubling the current joint cap.
- The $500,000 and $1,000,000 limits would be adjusted annually for inflation for tax years after 2024 and rounded down to the nearest $100.
- The new limits would apply to sales and exchanges after the bill's enactment.

Bigger tax break when you sell your home
If enacted, the bill would raise the tax-free gain you can get when you sell your main home. You could exclude up to $500,000 if you file single, or $1,000,000 if you file married filing jointly. This would apply to sales and exchanges after the bill becomes law. Starting with tax years that begin after 2024, those amounts would go up each year with inflation, rounded down to the next lower $100. This exclusion only applies to your principal residence.
