Promoting Access to Diabetic Shoes Act
Sponsored By: Representative LaHood
Introduced
Summary
Expands which clinicians can authorize Medicare coverage for diabetic shoes. The bill would add nurse practitioners and physician assistants to the clinicians who can satisfy the documentation requirement under Medicare for therapeutic shoes and inserts for people with diabetes. That broadens who can complete the paperwork and could make it easier for Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes to get covered shoes without an extra physician visit.

Easier Medicare access to diabetic shoes
The bill would let nurse practitioners and physician assistants sign Medicare paperwork for therapeutic shoes for people with diabetes. Today, many claims need a physician’s sign-off. This could make getting covered shoes faster if your main clinician is a nurse practitioner or PA. It would not change who qualifies or how much Medicare pays.
