Show full summary
  • Small businesses get targeted information on hiring CTE graduates and on CTE programs that match their workforce needs. This helps firms identify trained candidates and relevant training programs.
  • Career and technical education programs and students gain guidance on how to access SBDC and WBC resources to start or expand a business and to find career opportunities.
  • Small Business Development Centers must add duties to provide educational materials about hiring CTE graduates, inform CTE programs about center services, and connect businesses with programs.
  • Women's Business Centers must provide the same information and connections specifically for women-owned small business concerns and help link female entrepreneurs with CTE programs.
  • The law standardizes the term "career and technical education" by adopting the definition used in the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006.

Help for small businesses hiring CTE grads

If enacted, Small Business Development Centers and Women’s Business Centers would add new duties. They would give small businesses information on hiring graduates of career and technical education programs. They would tell CTE programs how students and grads can use SBDC and WBC services to start or grow a business. When appropriate, they would connect small businesses and CTE programs to help graduates find jobs. These changes would take effect upon enactment.

Standard definition for career and technical education

If enacted, the Small Business Act would use one standard meaning for “career and technical education.” It would match the definition in the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. This would guide how SBDCs and WBCs apply the new duties. It would take effect upon enactment.
