Show full summary
  • Veterans in rural and highly rural areas would have greater access to VA-funded transportation under definitions tied to the Department of Agriculture's Rural-Urban Commuting Areas (RUCA) codes.
  • County veterans service organizations and tribal veterans organizations would become eligible grant recipients, letting more local groups apply for and run transportation programs.
  • Grants would have a $60,000 maximum with up to $80,000 more available when a recipient must buy an ADA-compliant vehicle, and the prior $3 million yearly funding cap is replaced by an authorization of "such sums as may be necessary."

Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Grant limits and ADA vehicle help for veterans

Each VA transportation grant would be capped at $60,000. If a grantee must buy an ADA-compliant vehicle, a grant could be up to $80,000. The bill would replace the old $3 million per year cap with an authorization of “such sums as may be necessary.” This would not itself provide money; Congress would still need to appropriate funds.

More ride help for rural veterans

This bill would widen the VA’s ride-to-care grants beyond only highly rural areas. Rural and highly rural would follow the USDA RUCA codes. County veterans service organizations and Tribal organizations would be able to get these grants. If enacted, this could help more rural veterans get rides to VA care.
