Some closed rural hospitals could reopen
This bill would let some closed rural hospitals enroll as Rural Emergency Hospitals under Medicare starting Jan 1, 2027. To qualify, the facility must have been a critical access hospital or a general hospital in a rural county at any time from Jan 1, 2014 through Dec 26, 2020, and must have closed by the date of enactment. These facilities would skip certain action-plan steps and a prior enrollment rule. If the applying facility is within 35 miles of the nearest hospital, it would not get a Medicare payment increase. If it is within 10 miles, a related payment rule would also not apply.
