Protecting Taxpayer Resources Act

Sponsored By: Representative Rep. DelBene, Suzan K. [D-WA-1]

Introduced

Summary

Protects IRS operations by blocking Department of Homeland Security duties from being placed on IRS staff unless an independent inspector general signs off. This bill would require the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration to determine that IRS personnel are trained to perform any proposed DHS function and that assigning the function would not impede tax administration, including quality service to taxpayers and fair enforcement.

Limits on DHS duties for IRS staff

The bill would stop DHS from assigning its duties to IRS workers unless a watchdog first signs off. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration would have to find that IRS staff are trained and that this would not slow IRS service or fair enforcement. That finding would take effect when it is published in the Federal Register. The watchdog could also end the approval by publishing a notice.
