Summary

1. The Hook:

Show full summary

Provides federal grants to the National Law Enforcement Museum to fund community outreach, education, and officer safety and wellness programs. The bill would authorize a grant from the Secretary of the Interior to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund for the first seven fiscal years after enactment, with reporting and limits on how funds are used to support those program goals.

2. The Impact:

  • Families and visitors: Guarantees free museum admission for active and retired officers and family members of fallen officers and sets weekly free hours for the general public.
  • Law enforcement personnel: Funds officer safety and wellness programs, professional development, and innovations in safety that the Museum develops and evaluates.
  • Educators and researchers: Supports curricula, traveling exhibits, collection acquisition and digitization, and scholarly publications to expand classroom and online resources.
  • Museum operations and oversight: Requires annual progress reports and formal accounting of federal funds to the Secretary and to Congress.

3. The Bottom Line:

*The bill would authorize $6.0 million per year for each of the first seven fiscal years, totaling $42.0 million in authorized transfers to the Museum.*

Funding and free entry at law enforcement museum

This bill would authorize $6 million each year for seven years for grants to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The money would support the National Law Enforcement Museum’s outreach, public education, and officer safety and wellness programs. Active and retired officers and families of fallen officers would get free admission. The museum would offer free public hours at least once a week. If yearly funding falls short, the Interior Secretary could transfer money from the National Park Service to reach the authorized level. The Memorial Fund would file a yearly progress and spending report. The Secretary would send it to Congress and post it on the Interior Department website. Funds could also continue qualifying activities the museum was already doing at enactment.
