Sponsored By: Representative Rep. Sorensen, Eric [D-IL-17]

In Committee

Summary

Raises VA payment caps for home improvements and structural alterations for disabled veterans. It lifts two payment limits to $10,000 and adds an automatic annual update tied to the residential home cost of construction index to keep benefits aligned with construction costs.

Show full summary
  • Disabled veterans and families: Two VA payment caps increase to $10,000 from $6,800 and $2,000, boosting the maximum help available for home health-related improvements.
  • Future applicants: On the first day of each fiscal year the dollar amounts will be adjusted by the percentage change in the residential home cost of construction index so benefits track construction costs.
  • Eligibility timing: The higher caps and annual adjustments apply only to veterans who first apply on or after enactment; veterans whose eligibility was exhausted before enactment are not entitled to additional benefits under the new amounts.

Bigger VA help for disabled veterans' homes

If enacted, VA payments for home improvements and structural changes would rise to $10,000 per category, up from $6,800 and $2,000. This would apply only if a veteran first applies on or after the date the bill becomes law. Veterans who already used up these benefits before that date would not get more. Each year, on the first day of the fiscal year, the cap would adjust by last year’s residential home construction cost index; if the index did not rise, the cap would stay the same.
