Show full summary
- Families: Foods that contain the listed dyes would be classified as adulterated, so products with Citrus Red No. 2 or Orange B would be affected starting Dec. 31, 2025, and products with Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6, Green No. 3, Blue No. 1, or Blue No. 2 would be affected starting Dec. 31, 2026.
- Food manufacturers: Producers of packaged foods would need to stop using the specified qualified dyes by Dec. 31, 2025 and the covered dyes by Dec. 31, 2026 or have their foods fall under the law's adulteration standard.
- Regulatory scope: The bill defines two categories, “qualified color additive” and “covered color additive,” and explicitly lists the named dyes and any additives substantially similar to them.

Ban on certain food dyes in groceries
If enacted, foods with Citrus Red No. 2 or Orange B would be unsafe starting December 31, 2025. Starting December 31, 2026, foods with Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6, Green No. 3, Blue No. 1, or Blue No. 2 would be unsafe. Any substantially similar dyes would also be covered. Food makers, importers, and stores would need to stop selling foods with these dyes because they would be deemed adulterated. Households could see labels change as products are reformulated, even if FDA previously listed or certified these dyes.
