- States and local governments: Eligible recipients are States, political subdivisions, or their designees that can apply for grants to support remote search-and-rescue projects. Grants can cover up to 75% of an eligible project's cost.
- Emergency responders and SAR teams: Funds may be used to buy specialized equipment, maintain or repair existing gear, and reimburse teams for rescue activities on federal lands.
- Outdoor visitors and local communities: The Secretary must prioritize applications serving areas with a high visitors-to-residents ratio, aiming to improve response where visitor demand is highest.
