Pay Our Correctional Officers Fairly Act

Sponsored By: Representative Rep. Weber, Randy K. Sr. [R-TX-14]

Introduced

Summary

Gives Bureau of Prisons employees in the "Rest of U.S." access to higher locality pay by treating their official worksites as part of the nearest other pay locality. The bill sets a 200-mile cutoff, picks the locality with the highest comparability payment when multiple apply, and would begin to apply in pay periods starting 180 days after enactment.

Show full summary
  • Bureau of Prisons workers near other pay localities: would receive locality pay based on the nearest other pay locality, which can raise pay when that locality's comparability payment is higher.
  • Prevailing rate employees: explicitly included so hourly and wage-grade BOP staff are eligible for the same locality treatment.
  • Scope and timing: the rule only applies if another pay locality is within 200 miles and the nearest locality with the highest comparability payment is used; it takes effect for pay periods beginning 180 days after enactment.

Higher locality pay for federal prison staff

If enacted, you could get higher locality pay if you work for the Bureau of Prisons and your official worksite is in the "Rest of U.S." pay area. Your pay would be tied to the nearest other pay locality within 200 miles. If more than one is nearby, the highest comparability rate would be used. If none is within 200 miles, your pay would not change. Hourly prevailing rate employees would be included. The change would start with pay periods that begin 180 days after enactment.
