Summary
Protects U.S. citizenship and federal income tax status for any U.S. citizen elected Supreme Pontiff (the Pope). This bill would bar revocation of U.S. citizenship for a person elected Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, effective on enactment. It would also exempt that person from taxation under Subtitle A of the Internal Revenue Code for any taxable year in which they serve as Supreme Pontiff, with the tax exemption applying to taxable years ending after May 8, 2025.

No federal income tax for a U.S. Pope
If enacted, a U.S. citizen who serves any part of a tax year as the Pope would not owe federal income tax for that year. This would apply to tax years ending after May 8, 2025. It would only cover federal income taxes. Other taxes and years when they do not serve would not be exempt.
Keep U.S. citizenship if elected Pope
If enacted, a U.S. citizen elected Pope could not have their U.S. citizenship revoked. This protection would start on the date of enactment. It would not change citizenship rules for anyone else.
