Better data and regular reporting on ALS among veterans. This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to produce a detailed report on the incidence and prevalence of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in veterans, coordinate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and use the CDC ALS registry and biorepository to track cases.

  • Veterans with ALS: The VA must submit a report to Congress within 1 year that assesses how common ALS is in veterans, describes available resources and gaps, and proposes strategies to both reduce ALS risk and connect veterans in VA care to clinical trials and research.
  • VA and CDC: The VA must track prevalence using the CDC’s ALS registry and biorepository and maintain interagency coordination. The VA must provide an update to Congress every 3 years.
  • Policymakers and researchers: Congress will receive assessments, descriptions of resource needs, strategies for risk reduction, trial participation pathways, and any legislative recommendations to address ALS among veterans.
