Improving the Enlisted to Officer Judge Advocate Program Act
Sponsored By: Representative Elfreth
Introduced
Summary
Expands time for enlisted members to study law under a DoD-funded pathway. The bill raises the maximum active-duty detail for enlisted personnel who attend law school with Department of Defense funding from eight years to ten years. It also creates two distinct funding paths, one DoD-funded and one non-DoD-funded, and updates statutory cross-references so each path points to the correct eligibility rules.

Longer law school detail for enlisted
If enacted, this bill would let some enlisted service members stay on active duty up to 10 years while attending law school. It would apply only when the Secretary of a military department is paying the member’s law-school educational costs under subsection (a)(2). Under current law that DoD-funded detail is limited to eight years; the bill would raise that cap to 10 years. The bill would also update statute cross-references to distinguish the DoD-funded pathway from a non-DoD-funded pathway.
