Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Annual NSF funding authorized

If enacted, the bill would authorize $10 million per year for FY2026–FY2030 for the NSF Directorate for STEM Education to run the grant program. It would also authorize $1 million per year for FY2026–FY2030 for the related study. These are authorizations; the money would still need to be appropriated.

Study on K–12 modeling barriers

If enacted, the bill would require the NSF Director to seek an agreement within 180 days to hire the National Academies (or a similar group) to study barriers and best practices for teaching mathematical and statistical modeling in K–12. The study must hold at least one public meeting and deliver a report with recommendations to NSF, the Education Secretary, and Congress within 24 months of the agreement.

NSF grants for K–12 modeling

If enacted, the bill would create a competitive NSF grant program for colleges and nonprofits to improve K–12 mathematical and statistical modeling education. Grants would fund teacher training, curriculum research, student access to real data, partnerships with local schools, and steps to help historically underrepresented students. Applicants must describe target groups (including certain ESEA subgroups, students experiencing homelessness, and foster youth) and include outcome-focused evaluations. The bill would also set the authority to make awards to end on September 30, 2029.
