New ID checks for student aid
If enacted, the Department of Education would verify Social Security numbers and citizenship for federal student aid applicants. The Department would do these checks with the Social Security Administration. This would apply to anyone whose SSN must be provided for federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. If records do not match SSA data, your aid could be delayed or changed until you fix the mismatch.
