Pilot grants for food-as-medical help

If enacted, the Agriculture Department, with HHS, would set up a competitive "Food is Medicine" pilot within 2 years. Grants would go to community groups partnered with health care providers to help people with diet-related diseases. Grant funds could only be used for items like medically tailored meals, tailored grocery delivery or packaging, produce prescriptions, on-site emergency feeding, cooking education (including digital), dietary interventions, and participant transportation. The Department would give priority to projects that use local or regional foods or include registered dietitians. The Department would try to ensure geographic diversity and fair treatment of urban, rural, tribal, and territorial communities. The Department would report to Congress 2 years and 6 years after the pilot begins. The bill would authorize $20 million for fiscal years 2027 through 2031, but Congress would still need to appropriate the money.
