Use GI Bill to Repay Loans
If enacted, Post-9/11 GI Bill beneficiaries would be able to use education benefits to repay federal student loans. In fiscal year 2026, payments would be capped at $15,900 per person. After 2026, the annual cap would rise by the same percentage as Social Security cost-of-living increases effective December 1. You could elect monthly payments sent directly to your loan servicer. Each monthly payment could not exceed one-twelfth of the annual cap. Payments could be made for up to 36 months and would cover principal and interest on Title IV loans. The benefit could not be transferred to another person. VA would issue regulations and set up arrangements to run the program. The change would apply to benefits paid for months starting on or after enactment.
