The resolution would express support for that observance and acknowledge the importance of implementing food waste prevention and organics recycling steps from the June 2024 National Strategy. It cites that about $1 trillion in food is wasted each year, nearly 40% of food produced is lost, and 1.05 billion tons were wasted in 2022. It links food loss and waste to hunger and child undernutrition, noting 783 million people affected and 150 million children under five who are stunted, and to climate change, citing food-related emissions of 8–10% of global greenhouse gases and methane’s very high short-term warming power.
