Summary

Allow SNAP benefits to buy hot, ready-to-eat foods. This bill would let people use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to purchase hot foods or hot food products ready for immediate consumption. It would allow consumption at home or immediately and would continue to exclude alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

  • Stores and food vendors could accept SNAP for hot ready-to-eat foods, but offers would be limited so that hot foods make up no more than 50 percent of a seller's total gross sales. The bill also explicitly counts hot ready-to-eat foods as allowable accessory items under the program.

Hot prepared foods allowed with SNAP

If enacted, you would be able to use SNAP benefits to buy hot prepared foods ready to eat. This would let you consume purchases at home or immediately after buying them. It would only apply when the seller's qualifying offer gets 50% or less of gross sales from hot ready-to-eat foods. Alcohol and tobacco would still be excluded from SNAP purchases. The change would take effect upon enactment.
