Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

National gate safety education campaign

If enacted, the CPSC would run a national campaign within two years about dangers from covered gates, including detached or falling gates. The campaign would promote low-cost prevention and best practices for design, installation, inspection, maintenance, and improvement. Materials would be tailored for manufacturers, installers, retailers, service companies, owners and operators, and building officials and local educational agencies. The CPSC would report to Congress on the campaign not later than three years after enactment.

New safety rules for large gates

If enacted, the CPSC would have to issue a final safety standard for covered gates within one year. Covered gates would include automatic and manual vehicular gates and any gate wider than 48 inches or 84 inches tall or taller. These gates would need to meet listed ASTM standards dated January 1, 2025 (or successor standards). Gates with operators would need to meet ANSI/CAN/UL 325 as of January 1, 2025 (or successors). Revised voluntary standards would generally be treated as adopted 180 days after notice unless the CPSC finds no safety improvement within 90 days.
