Federal recognition and member benefits

If enacted, the bill would recognize the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians as a federally recognized tribe. The Tribe and each enrolled member would be eligible for federal services and benefits for Indian tribes. The Tribe would need to give the Interior Secretary a membership roll within 18 months after enactment. Federal laws that apply generally to Indian tribes would apply to the Tribe. The Tribe's service area for delivering services would be five Michigan counties: Newaygo, Oceana, Kent, Muskegon, and Ottawa.

Land trust and reservation options

If enacted, the Interior Secretary would take land into trust for the Tribe in Muskegon, Newaygo, and Oceana Counties if the land is conveyed and has no liens. The Secretary could also take Tribal fee land in Kent and Ottawa Counties into trust under the Indian Reorganization Act. The Tribe could ask that land taken into trust be treated as reservation land. The Secretary would have 18 months to issue a written decision after the Tribe requests land be taken into trust.
