Summary
Adds peer support services and peer support specialists into Medicare coverage at community mental health centers, Federally qualified health centers, rural health clinics, and certified community behavioral health clinics. This bill would define peer support services and set certification standards tied to National Practice Guidelines and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration core competencies.

- Individuals diagnosed with a mental health condition or a substance use disorder would gain access to peer-delivered emotional, informational, instrumental, and social supports intended to promote recovery and community integration.
- People recovering from mental health or substance use conditions who complete a state or Secretary-approved certification process would qualify as peer support specialists and be eligible to furnish these services.
- Medicare law would be amended to list peer support services as covered services at community providers and to address coverage for peer services that are not furnished by those designated clinics. The changes would apply to services furnished on or after January 1, 2027.

Medicare coverage for peer support
If enacted, you would be able to get Medicare coverage for peer support services starting January 1, 2027 if you are enrolled in Medicare and have a diagnosed mental health condition or substance use disorder. To be covered, the service must be provided at an FQHC, RHC, community mental health center, or a certified community behavioral health clinic and must use a certified peer support specialist. Services provided outside those facility types would not be covered by Medicare.
