Multiemployer Plan Relief Act

Sponsored By: Senator Amy Klobuchar

Introduced

Summary

Exempts multiemployer pension plans from automatic enrollment requirements. The bill changes Internal Revenue Code section 414A(c)(3) to add "any multiemployer plan (within the meaning of section 414(f))" alongside governmental and church plans. The amendment applies to taxable years beginning after December 31, 2024. That means multiemployer plans would qualify for the same automatic enrollment exception that governmental and church plans already have.

Multiemployer plans avoid auto-enrollment

This bill would add multiemployer plans to the list of plans excepted from automatic enrollment rules. If enacted, employers and plan sponsors that contribute to multiemployer retirement plans would not have to automatically enroll workers under the current auto-enrollment rules. Employees covered by those plans would be less likely to be default-enrolled and might save less by default. The change would apply to taxable years beginning after December 31, 2024.
