Grants to fix commuter rail bridges
If enacted, this bill would create a federal grant program to pay for maintenance, replacement, and rehabilitation of commuter rail bridges. The Department of Transportation would award competitive grants to public transit operators for capital costs tied to commuter rail bridge use. Grants would cover only the net capital costs attributable to public transportation use and would follow the same terms as existing transit capital grants. Operators that do not own a bridge would need a bridge access agreement with the owner before taking a grant. The Secretary would have to solicit applications within 30 days after funds are available for a fiscal year and award grants within the earlier of 75 days after solicitation or the fiscal year end. The bill would authorize $1.5 billion each year for fiscal years 2027 through 2031 to carry out the program.
